MANILA, Philippines (AFP) — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday urged doctors to refrain from prescribing the generic version of Viagra, adding to the confusion among doctors about its possible use in the country.
“These kinds of drugs, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction, should be avoided,” the FDA said in a statement.
The FDA’s move came as the drugmaker recalled a few generic versions of Viagra.
Pfizer Inc. recalled the pills after it was alerted by a patient in the Philippines who said he suffered headaches from the pills. He was not sure why he had received such a notice.
“We are having difficulty in the US,” the company said in a statement. “FDA has no comment.”
Pfizer said the recall is “unnecessary and inadvisable, as we have not had an opportunity to assess the situation.”
In a statement, Pfizer said: “We regret the inconvenience caused by this recall and are committed to working with the FDA to resolve the issue.”
The FDA has not yet issued a statement on the recall. However, Pfizer said it was in “conjunctivitis.”
Pfizer on Tuesday said it was in “conjunctivitis” and in “vivo-durante,” a word used in medical jargon to describe a condition in which a medicine does not work for a certain amount of time. It added that it was “informally” issued. The agency said that some of the medications had been recalled as the pills were being recalled in an effort to avoid the recall.
The company is also recalling the following drugs: Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Propecia, Stendra, Stendra, and Staxyn.

R. D’Agata, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, who led the FDA’s investigation.
Roche, which manufactures the popular drugs, said it was aware of the problem in December when it recalled several of its medicines.
“It is a bit like having a headache,” said Dr. David M. Balsos, an associate professor at the University of California, San Francisco, who wasn’t involved in the recall.
Balsos said that while some patients did not respond to the FDA’s investigation, others might have been helped.
“I think the confusion is a bit more subtle,” he said.
